Arabica Coffee Modio

Hidden deep within the highlands of Central Papua lies Modio, a remote village in Mapia Tengah, Dogiyai Regency, where one of Indonesia’s most remarkable coffee stories began. Surrounded by dense forests, mountain rivers, and rugged terrain, Modio has preserved a coffee heritage shaped by history, resilience, and nature.
The roots of Modio coffee trace back to 1956–1962, when early missionaries first introduced and cultivated Arabica Typica coffee trees in the region. Typica is one of the oldest and most respected Arabica varieties in the world, known for its elegant cup profile and increasingly rare presence in many origins. While it has disappeared from many traditional growing areas, Typica continues to thrive in the cool highlands of Papua, passed down from generation to generation.
For the people of Modio, coffee has never been just a crop. Nearly every household has long grown coffee trees as part of daily life and family tradition. For decades, farmers carried harvested coffee by foot through rocky paths, forests, hills, and across the Mapia River using traditional noken bags, simply to reach the nearest market. Every harvest represented determination, sacrifice, and hope for a better future.
Today, that same dedication continues through quality-focused production and modern evaluation standards. Recent laboratory cupping analysis conducted by LP PUSLITKOKA – Indonesia Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute awarded Modio Washed Process Arabica a final score of 86.38, placing it in the Specialty Grade category. The coffee showed excellent cup cleanliness and sweetness, strong uniformity, balanced structure, and a refined sensory profile with notes of flowery blossom, honeyed sweetness, brown sugar, spicy chili-like nuances, and sweet corn. This result reflects how Modio’s coffee heritage is not only preserved, but continuously maintained to meet today’s specialty coffee standards.
Grown in fertile mountain soil, under cool temperatures and natural conditions, Modio Arabica offers a cup profile that is both distinctive and authentic to Papua’s terroir. It is coffee shaped by altitude, protected by tradition, and elevated by generations of care.
